Who – Mullica Township is in the process of pursuing funds through the USEPA’s Brownfields Program to remediate the Former Joseph Perona Scrapyard Facility.
What – USEPA’s Brownfields Program helps communities assess, clean up, and reuse contaminated or underutilized properties by providing funding, technical assistance, and guidance to protect public health, spur redevelopment, and revitalize neighborhoods.
Where – The Former Joseph Perona Scrapyard is a long-blighted property in Mullica Township impacted by historic scrap processing, waste disposal, and a tire fire, resulting in contaminated soils and debris that pose environmental and public health concerns. Property address: 1801 Columbia Road, Mullica Township, New Jersey 08217 (Block 2401, Lot 10).
When – A grant application will be submitted by January 28, 2026. A public meeting to be held on January 8, 2026 (more info below).
Why – The remediation of this proposed Brownfield site will provide Mullica Township the opportunity to redevelop the property to meet community needs through several potential avenues. These possibilities include the protection of open space, creation of recreational resources, and installation of energy efficient infrastructure.
A public meeting on the draft application and ABCA will take place on January 8th, 2026 at the Elwood School, 500 Elwood Road, Elwood NJ 08217 at 7:00 PM.
A copy of the draft EPA Brownfield application, including the Analysis of Brownfields Cleanup Alternatives (ABCA), is available upon request for public review and comment, and will be posted online on January 8, 2026.
